I moved to the US to be with my now husband, Josh. To build community in my new home, I joined art classes – pottery being one of them. Instantly, I knew this was something I wanted to keep doing for the rest of my life. Not only has it brought countless people into my life that I love and admire but it’s also given me a sense of purpose.
My very first pottery class was an introduction to hand building class where I learned some of the basic techniques involved in making pots. From there, I took on the wheel. I love both methods of creating pots and have since continued to seek out learning opportunities that will push me as an artist, including a part-time apprenticeship with a local NC potter who specializes in wood-fired ceramics.
Some Firsts:
As a potter, I’m always experimenting with new building, glazing, and firing techniques to produce a range of forms and aesthetics. I enjoy focusing on the tiniest of details (evident in my decorative and jewelry pieces) and pushing myself to play with texture and scale. I also appreciate how different firing processes influence the look and feel of pots, and am fortunate to have access to electric, gas, and wood-fired kilns to produce my work.
You’ll find my stamp, which Josh and I designed together, on the bottom of each of my pots – and most of my jewelry. A nod to our last name, the design is a reconfiguration of my initials (KMF) in the image of a fish.
My husband, Josh, has not only contributed his name to my pottery but his technical and business savvy. He is the brains behind the operation (and, if I’m honest, the brawn and beauty too), dedicating countless hours to make my pottery shine online.
